Invitation to the Opening Lecture of the ACTIONr Summer School

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Christa Schleper, Head of the Archaea Biology and Ecogenomics Unit, University of Vienna

As part of the PhD Summer School entitled:
“Biological Nitrification Inhibition: Integrating Microbial Functions, Plant Traits, and Technological Innovations for Sustainable Nitrogen Cycling”,
the Department of Environmental Sciences of the University of Thessaly is pleased to invite you to the opening lecture by Prof. Dr. Christa Schleper (Poster).

📅 Monday, 12 May 2025
🕝 13:30 – 14:30
📍 Hippocrates Amphitheatre, School of Health Sciences, Biopolis Campus, Larissa, Greece
🎤 Lecture title: “What is wrong with the Nitrogen cycle – and how can we fix it?”

Prof. Dr. Schleper, Head of the Archaea Biology and Ecogenomics Unit and the Archaea Ecology and Evolution Group at the University of Vienna, is internationally renowned for her pioneering work in microbial ecology and the biology of Archaea. In this lecture, she will explore the critical challenges associated with the nitrogen cycle and propose innovative solutions informed by the latest microbiological research.

This keynote marks the official launch of the ACTIONr PhD Summer School (12–16 May 2025), held under the framework of the Research Action Network for Reducing Reactive Nitrogen Losses from Agricultural Ecosystems (ACTIONr) — a European initiative dedicated to sustainable nitrogen management in agricultural systems.

The Summer School is funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme (Project ACTIONr, Grant No. 101079299) and is jointly organized by the University of Thessaly, through its Departments of Biochemistry and Biotechnology and Environmental Sciences.

📣 This event is open to the public.
