Elias Anastassopoulos was born in Athens and studied Horticulture at the Agricultural University of Athens (1986-1991). He followed postgraduate studies (MSc) in Plant Biotechnology at the University of London (Wye College) (1991-1992) and completed his studies at the University of Crete (Heraklion) where he received a PhD in Plant Biology, under a scholarship from the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (F.Ο.R.T.Η) during his PhD (1992-2000) and postgraduate studies (2000 – 2002).
He taught at the TEI Crete (Heraklion) (1992-1997), TEI Larisas (2003 – 2012) and TEI Thessaly (2018-2019) Biotechnology, Genetics and Plant Breeding. Since 2019 he is Professor in Biotechnology, teaches Environmental Biotechnology, at the University of Thessaly and collaborator of REBIRTH Cluster of Excellence, Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany. His main research interest lies in cryobiology and biological ice nucleation in particular, its impact in the environment and its biotechnological applications. He collaborates with the industry in biomimetics and cryotechnology related issues, in order to reduce energy consumption; he holds two patents. His research findings have been presented in conferences in Europe, America and Asia. In 2012 he received the «Global Achievement Award for Phyllosphere Biology» from Amity University, India for his scientific accomplishments.
