Professional Prospects

 

The professional rights of the Department of Environmental Sciences graduates are expected to cover the entire spectrum of activities related to environmental issues, from requirements analysis and drafting of studies to design of infrastructure and the formation of the institutional and legal framework.

A graduate of the Department of Environmental Sciences, who is defined as a graduate Environmental Scientist, is qualified to:

  • process, draft and evaluate environmental impact studies,
  • conduct environmental quality controls
  • manage environmental systems,
  • be employed in environmental education, training, information and communication.

An Environmental Scientist is expected to work either independently or in collaboration with other scientists in the Public and/or Private sector, and apply technology in modern and specialized areas of projects and tasks of its specialty.

 

 

More specifically, Environmental Scientists can gain employment in the environmental sector to:

  • Implement expertise consulting and judgements, intended for administrative or judicial use, on environmental and pollution issues.
  • Submit proposals to the European Commission regarding subsidized research and technological development programmes, which fall within the broader field of Environmental Sciences, and implement the approved projects.
  • Design and implement Environmental Awareness Programmes, such as public information and awareness programmes, with campaigns, informative publications, television and multimedia programmes, etc.
  • Support Supplementary Education Programmes and Training Seminars.
  • Staff, support and develop Environmental and Energy Education Centers, as well as the network of Environmental Education Officers in the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports.
  • Implement environmental diplomacy & international relations actions.

Environmental Scientists conduct studies and collaborate with other scientists to carry out:

  • Environmental Studies.
  • Spatial Planning and Regulatory Studies.
  • Landscape design and green project studies.
  • Study and supervision of plans and management projects regarding the treatment and disposal of gaseous, liquid, solid and hazardous waste; planning for recycling and recovery, and protection from noise pollution.
  • Restoration of the environment and polluted receptors; design of measures for the integrated pollution prevention and control.
  • Risk assessment studies and plans for preventing and addressing environmental risk.

Finally, in accordance with Decision D2/13934 (Government Gazette Issue 204B/02.03.2001) and article 29 of Law 4521 (Government Gazette Issue 38A/02.03.2018), graduates of the Department of Environmental Sciences who additionally hold a Certificate of Pedagogical and Teaching Competence, are eligible to be appointed as teaching staff in primary and secondary education.
