On June 27, 2025, the Department of Environmental Sciences of the University of Thessaly actively participated in the specialized Workshop on Biological Nitrification Inhibition, hosted at the Max Planck Institute as part of the HORIZON 2021–2027 project ACTIONr (Grant agreement No 101079299).

The workshop was co-organized by the Departments of Biochemistry & Biotechnology and Environmental Sciences of the University of Thessaly, aiming to deepen scientific exchange on microbial ecology and the sustainable management of nitrogen in terrestrial ecosystems.

From the Department of Environmental Sciences, Assistant Professor Evangelia Papadopoulou, along with PhD candidates Maria Kolovou and Dimitris Dalkidis, presented significant research findings. These included the effects of nitrification inhibitors on the ammonia-oxidizing archaeon Nitrososphaera viennensis, explored through transcriptomic and proteomic approaches, the use of synthetic microbial communities (SynComs) to more realistically assess the impact of biological nitrification inhibitors on soil nitrifiers, and the environmental fate of these inhibitors in soil environments.

This participation further strengthened the Department’s international profile in the fields of microbial ecology and sustainable nitrogen management in agriculture.
